Bioethanol is produced from biological materials/feedstock. It is rectified alcohol. It is made of starchy crops (maize, barley, wheat, etc.). When producing bioethanol first biomass is converted to sugar, which is then turned into ethanol, by using the methods of fermentation and distillation. The primary materials for ethanol are maize, barley, sugar cane and wheat, but in some cases wood and grass could also be used as raw materials.
Advantages of E85 bioethanol fuel:
1. Cheaper than petrol
The EU subsidies the use of renewable energy, therefore less excise tax applied to the E85.
2. Has a higher octane rating than the best petrol
Since the E85 bioethanol has an octane rating of 105, the engine runs more efficiently.
When using ethanol, the emission of Carbon dioxide is canceled out by greater uptake of carbon dioxide by the plants as they grow to produce the biomass. This way ethanol does not accelerate the greenhouse effect.
4. Cleans the fuel system
Because of the fact E85 contains alcohol it is a better solvent than the normal petrol. Using E85 gets the fuel system clearer, increases the power output of the vehicle and also the lifespan of the fuel injectors, while decreases the consumption.
As for the cleaning effect of the E85, when changing to ethanol, it is useful to replace the fuel filter after 1000 km, as it is likely to clog with the great amount of contaminants.
The disadvantages of E85 bioethanol:
1. The specific energy of ethanol is lower than that of the petrol
Since the energy content of the ethanol is lower than that of the petrol, in order to achieve the same efficiency, foolproof engine and any benefits ethanol could provide, we need to use a greater amount of E85.
That is why it is necessary to use ethanol conversion kits, which change the ratio of fuel-air mixture. As a result the consumption of the vehicle could increase by 20-25% when it is in ethanol mode, however because of the more reasonable price of the E85, this does not mean excess in the budget.
It might happen, due to the advantages of the E85 (cleaning, higher octane number), that there is no increase in consumption, moreover, some of our clients have already reported decrease in consumption.
Does ethanol ruin the parts made of rubber and the gaskets?
Although ethanol is a more agressive substance than petrol, there is only a minimal risk of decrease in the lifespan of the gaskets and rubber parts. The only problems may happen to the rubber parts which are extensively used or cracked. Before converting to ethanol, it is recommended to check or exchange the rubber tubes and gaskets of the fuel system.
What does the name of the fuel E85 mean?
E85 consists of 85% bioethanol and 15% petrol. Its octane number is 105, as opposed to the octane number of the normal petrol, which is 95. The advantage of the higher octane number is that the efficiency of the car might improve, and the consumption might decrease, caused by the decline of the detonations in the engine. Besides, the lifespan of the engine is also increasing when ethanol is used, while the detonations can severely damage the engine.
Bioethanol is a form of renewable energy. Using bioethanol is not only economic, but also environmentally friendly. The CO2 emission during its use is offset by the absorption by the plants its made of, that is why bioethanol does not intensify the greenhouse effect.
